Hey guys, I suffer with really dry skin in the winter and oily skin in the summer. So it gets quite complex for my skin care routine as I have to keep changing my moisturisers in the different seasons. So I thought id use my knowledge to share with you guys my recommendations for moisturisers for different skin types.
Firstly, it is important to determine your skin type. The four main types of skin types are ‘normal‘, ‘dry’, ‘oily’, and ‘combination‘.
If you have dry skin, you will constantly experience flaking, and tightness throughout the day. Constant moisturisers and exfoliation is a must in this case.
If you have oily skin, your pores will be congested and clogged. Your skin will also appear oily, even through makeup. Exfoliation is essential to t promote cell turn over.
If you have combination skin, will experience both. Sometimes an oily t -zone area and dry elsewhere. Therefore this is hard to tackle! which is what I have.
If you have normal skin and don’t experience either of these, well aren’t you lucky! But a good moisturiser is still important !

Dry skin
- Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Cream (50ml) – £57.00 from cult beauty. I first came across this moisturiser when I received a sample from Sephora and I loved it. It has a silky water gel base so is perfect for hydrating dry skin. It makes your skin firmer, stronger and softer, with a formula helping your skin to stay super fresh. Yes it is very expensive, but its expensive for a reason, it has rich ingredients to maintain hydrated skin, this is on my wish list.
- Clinique moisture surge 72 Hour Auto Replenishing Hydrator – 30ml Currently £15.00 on look fantastic. I currently use this moisturiser as my day moisturiser. I got it because my skin became really dry in the winter so I purchased this for a skin boost and have used it ever since. It contains hyaluronic acid which is essential in an moisturiser for dry skin to hold water and hydration in your skin. This moisturiser does it perfectly!
- Kiehls ultra facial cream– 50ml £26.00 on look fantastic. I have heard a lot of raves about this cream, I have just ordered it on look fantastic so still have to try it out but many of my friends recommend it. Its fast-absorbing cream provides water replenishment throughout the day by absorbing moisture from the air, for continuous comfort and moisture-balanced skin.
- La Roche-Posay Nutritic Intense Rich 50ml – £18.00 on look fantastic. La Roche is more aimed at problematic skin, I suffer with redness In some places so I feel this helps with my redness but it also is super hydrating. It is especially formulated for sensitive and dry skin
- The ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 – Cult Beauty £5.90. This isn’t a moisturiser as such, but Hyaluronic Acid is a good solution to dry skin. I use this every night before bed to add extra moisture to my skin. You add a few drops in the evening and morning before moisturiser to plump the skin.
Oily Skin
- Skin Repair Light Moisturiser Combination/Oily £22 on Liz Earle. I used Liz Earle products a while ago now, but they are more aimed at oily skin where my skin is more dry now, thats why I stopped using them. But they are very light products on the skin so they are perfect for sensitive skin. You still need to moisturise when you have oily skin to replace the oils lost, a non oily moisturiser is essential like this one. This has a finely balanced blend of naturally active skin-nourishing ingredients, including borage oil echinacea, hops and avocado oil, plus natural source antioxidant vitamin E, to replace lost moisture and leave skin feeling soft and smooth.
- Dermologica Active Moist light oil free lotion – Dermologica £35. I love dermologica, there products are expensive but they last a long time. Dermologica provide a whole range of products suited to your skin needs. This oil free lotion contains a formula of Silk Amino Acids and a unique combination of plant extracts that help to improve skin texture and combat surface dehydration.
- Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream Moisturiser – Boots £12.99. If you’re looking for something cheaper, then this drug store moisturiser is perfect for you. Not only is it cheap it is also oil free and especially suited for oily skin. This refreshing moisturiser contains a unique Hyaluronic Gel Matrix to instantly lock in intense hydration and continuously release it as and when your skin needs it throughout the day.
- La Roche-Posay Effaclar H Moisturiser 40ml – Look Fantastic £17.00. Again La Roche is targeted for problematic skin. It is a soothing compensation moisturiser which moisturises oily skin that feels weak and fragile. It also provides skin with the lipids it lacks to reconstitute the protective hydrolipidic film.
Combination Skin

- Clinique Dramatically Different Hydrating Jelly Anti Pollution 125ml – £31.00 look fantastic. Cliniques moisturisers are so hydrating, this jelly moisturiser replenishes your complexion with hyaluronic acid and a water jelly texture to combat dryness, yet restore skins moisture. Perfect for combination skin and it is oil free!
- Mario Badescu Buttermilk Moisturiser – £14.50 Beauty Bay. I love Mario Badescu products so much! Especially there sprays! But this moisturiser is amazing, it is especially for combination skin enriched with lactic acid delivering silky smooth skin making your face look radiant and healthy!
- CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion 52ml– £13.00 Boots. Even though it states for normal to dry skin, this cheap drug store moisturiser is ideal for combination skin. It contains hyaluronic acid and has no greasy residue. It also has an SPF of 25! Cant go wrong.
For normal skin you can wear any of the above moisturisers, but id also recommend Clarins, Kiehls, Estee Lauder and Charlotte Tilbury for Radiance, Anti ageing, and normal skin!
